On September 13th, Beijing time, NBA reporter Shams Shams reported that free agent guard Malcolm Brogdon has signed with the Knicks on a one-year, non-guaranteed minimum contract. It was previously reported that Brogdon wanted to sign with the Warriors, but the Warriors were unable to finalize Kuminga's contract, leaving the team without reinforcements. The Knicks successfully snagged Brogdon on a non-guaranteed contract.
Brogdon, born on December 11, 1992, stands 1.93 meters tall with a wingspan of 2.10 meters. Last season, Brogdon was plagued by injuries and played in only 24 games for the Wizards, 13 of which were starts. He averaged 23.5 minutes per game, scoring 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 0.5 steals, shooting 43.3%, 28.6%, and 88% from the field.
Brogdon is too fragile, having played in only 63 games combined over the past two years. In the 2022-23 season, Brogdon played 67 games for the Celtics, all as a reserve. He averaged 28.7 minutes per game, 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 0.7 steals, shooting 48.4%, 44.4%, and 87% from the field. He was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year!
Brogdon's previous contract was for two years and $45 million, expiring this summer. Had he been healthier, he wouldn't have fallen to this point. This summer, the Knicks fired Thibodeau and hired Mike Brown as head coach. Thibodeau dislikes using bench players, but Mike Brown is different, so Brogdon will get plenty of opportunities.
Also today, the Knicks officially announced the signing of Landry Shamet to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract and the signing of Garrison Matthews to a training camp contract. These three new additions are all guards, and they will compete for a permanent contract. The NBA is so competitive that even Brogdon and Shamet can't secure a guaranteed contract.
Shamet, born on March 13, 1997, stands 1.93 meters tall with a wingspan of 2 meters. He was the 26th pick in the 2018 first round. On September 14, 2024, the Knicks gave Shamet a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract. On October 20, 2024, the Knicks waived him. On December 23, 2024, the Knicks re-signed Shamet to a one-year minimum contract.
In the 2024-25 season, Shamet played 50 regular season games with the Knicks, all as a reserve. He averaged 15.2 minutes per game, 5.7 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.5 assists, and 0.5 steals, shooting 46.1%, 39.7%, and 66.7% from the field. He had the highest field goal percentage of his career and the second-best three-point shooting percentage of his career, second only to his rookie season.
This year's playoffs, Shamet played in 11 games, averaging 7.5 minutes, 2.4 points, 0.4 rebounds, and 0.7 assists. His three-way shooting percentages were 45%, 46.7%, and 25%. Besides returning to the Knicks, Shamet also landed another job this summer: the official photographer for the US Open. I never expected he had such a talent.
Throughout his NBA career, Shamet has played for the 76ers, Clippers, Nets, Suns, Wizards, and Knicks, appearing in a total of 398 regular-season games, 97 of which he started. He averaged 21.1 minutes per game, 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.7 turnovers. His three-way shooting percentages were 41.3%, 38.5%, and 83.3%.
This offseason, the Knicks also signed Clarkson and Yabusele! One last question: Do you think the Knicks can break out of the Eastern Conference next season?
