The Utah Jazz are reportedly one of the teams pushing hard to trade Boston Celtics' Jaylen Brown.
Despite the expected payroll hit with Jayson Tatum out due to injury, the Boston Celtics seem determined not to trade Jaylen Brown and Derrick White this offseason. But Utah is reportedly still trying to change their minds.
In the past few days, the Celtics traded Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, both of whom will make more than $30 million next season, with Porzingis a high injury risk and Holiday over 30 with three years left on his contract.
Brown and White, two of Boston Celtics' best players, don't have to worry about that. Despite reservations about their respective values — Brown is entering the second year of a five-year, $285.4 million extension, while White will begin a four-year, $118 million contract this year — neither is yet to turn 31, both have played at least 63 games in each of the past four years, and they remain productive players, especially on a perennial championship-contending team like the Celtics.
However, teams, especially the Jazz, appear intent on Boston holding out on trading Brown.
"The Utah Jazz, led by former Celtics executive Danny Ainge and his son Austin Ainge, have aggressively pursued 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown over the past few days, multiple league sources told ClutchPoints," Brett Siegel wrote.
“The trade proposal is speculated to revolve around the fifth overall pick and multiple quality players in the final years of their contracts, which would give the Boston Celtics immediate cap space in 2026 to build around Jayson Tatum.”
Despite Tatum’s interest in the Celtics, Siegel reports that the Celtics “have not actively shopped either player to the highest bidder, and there are no indications that the Boston Celtics want to trade them.”
The Boston Celtics won the NBA title a year ago and were often predicted to defend their title this year, but are expected to have a reduced roster given Tatum’s injury, which will likely prevent him from returning at any point in the 2025-26 season or the playoffs. After losing the five-time All-Star and the team being sold, the Celtics appear ready to use next season to adjust their cap space and roster structure.
